From 021 to 013. In Touch With Gunna

This man is one of the men that make me believe that anything is possible regardless of living conditions. He is a Cape Town rapper busting rhymes from a wheelchair. I got in touch with The Real Gunna.

Wise: Gunna ma dwag

Gunna: What’s good my G

Wise: I'm collected my guy. How is the cape today?

Gunna: It’s really windy n cold G but can't complain. Just getting' ready to take over the world. And ya side?

Wise: it's cool with winter sneaking on us. So you ready?

Gunna: Ready as hell

Wise: Ma man that's what I like to hear. First tell us about Gunna. Who is Gunna and what is he about?

Gunna: Gunna is an artist, brand, and entrepreneur and does hip hop musik. What Gunna is about is creative thinking, positivity, inspiring the youth and most importantly tryna make somethin' out of nothin'. I believe I'm Blessed. So I'm using' that to bless other people through my musik.

Wise: Ma man I'm sure my audiences wanna know where you hail from....

Gunna: I'm from the murder capital (haha) - A biggest township in Cape Town that goes by the name of "Khayelitsha" the code is 7784 - But was born in Mitchells Plain, also from Cape Town just that it was more of a suburb than khayelitsha. Moved from there to Khayelitsha in 1998 after ma pops passed in 1997. So yea, that's where this rose that grew from the concrete hail from.

Wise: hahaha ok, when did you get into this rapping Game?

Gunna: I've always been here by Heart, just that couldn't get a chance of a Studio time - After I left high school (dropped out) in 2010, I started gettin' closer n closer, and while I was in hospital I jot down some rhymez over beatz I copped from the internet. When I got out in 2012 out of hospital, I met with a producer who owns a record label "Paperwork Productions" - And dropped my first official single in 2013 with them, dropped another one same year then recorded a full album (which I haven't dropped til' today caus' of poor quality I got from that label) - So since then, I've been puttin' in work raisin' bar for the culture to remain relevant to the game. By the way right now I'm with Purple Beats Studios; I also
own a record label aswel RMG Records

Wise: You stayed at the hospital for a while. wanna talk about it?

Gunna: Yes sir I can talk about it - I stayed in hospital for almost a year last time I was there to amputate my right leg after it got infected by the bullet that hit me back in 2008, when I was young dumb and livin' life on a fast lane and associated withe wrong people and got caught up in the mix. All of that experience had a young men livin' life on a wheelchair and still I push forward can't give up that's what I was taught. Make long story short, I got shot in 2008 and that's the reason I've been in and out of hospital. I opened my eyes in 2013 that now I got make a change in my life and for the better. Since then I've never been to hospital. I hate them (haha) but shout out to my doctor, he gave me hope and I gave him a great experience, I almost died last time I was there but being this soldier God created I'm still here. Thanks for askin' G.

Wise: Ma man I was inspired when I heard you a rapper sitting on a wheelchair. Now coming back to music, who did you grow up listening to and who is your biggest influence?

Gunna: I grew up listening to a lot of Tupac, Eminem, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Game, 50 Cent to name a few. But mostly was influenced by 2pac caus' it looked like me and him had the same vision, he spoke to me soul to soul heart to heart beat for a beat.

Wise: And what challenges do you face as a rapper, in fact as Gunna?

Gunna: As an artist the challenge I'm facin' is that people wanna support you when you're on tv, magazine or winning. As a brand, the challenge I'm facin' so far is none (haha). As an entrepreneur, I'm still on the rise and my challenge is gettin' those deals but I'm gettin' there, I'm on my way up. I'm in this business caus' it’s a challenge itself to be here, and I'm here to win and take it all. For my people, my familia. Failure for me is a livin' proof that I'm tryin' and learning - So now all I have to do is get up and try again from what I've learnt. It goes on and on. Nobody can stop me now but God.

Wise: What is the highlight of your career?

Gunna: When I was featured on HYPE Magazine representin' Cape Town as the Best Newcomer in 2016, it was a feb/march issue. That's the biggest achievement in my career by far. I also took part as a performer a year ago at iKasi Experience, it’s a biggest township event hosted by DJ LOYD and Sir Vincent. Also released the best EP to come out of CPT last year entitled "Revolution" - Also got 3 singles that's been played at Bush Radio on the Headwarmaz Show. It’s been a great journey and there's more still to come.

Wise: Ma man, now tell me, you've been vocal in raising your concern against promoters not booking the locals especially upcoming artists. Tell us about it

Gunna: Yea G - that's a big issue around here that they sleepin' on. We have a lot of talent in the local and some of us are workin' so hard but still, we ain't recognized. Now they make us believe we gotta head to Joburg to make it, whereas there are organizers who are doing it big in events who only focusing on getting major artists and sleeping on the great upcoming artists like us. Caus' they only wannaa eat alone, Casper is already getting' millions but these people still book him in Cape Town. What about us gettin' that paper they givin' them to support our families aswel? Caus' we also do this music for them but they do nothin' for us. It’s a big problem and most artists enjoy being booked for free, that's like robbing me off my talent man my hard work. They have to give us a chance to shine and get that money, they shouldn't eat alone. But I will also empower artists to not only depend on them, save money get a team together people who are organized to sit down with and plan your own event, book your own people and pay them for their time so we can all eat. That's part of my mission, all we need is to just unite and support each other's visions. Even though it ain't easy

Wise: But the question however, does upcoming artists sell themselves enough, do you guys go out there pull all the muscles to network and grow a working and professional relationship with promoters ?

Gunna: Promoters don't wanna be found. And when you find them, they run away. I don't wanna drop names and sound like a hater, but to be honest it’s like that. I appreciate the organizers who recognizing' me and book me but I feel like there's more than that. Caus' you can't ask me to go to Town where people pay to get in and I perform but you can't pay me for my time. There's nothin' professional about that if you ask me, it’s just wastin' my time. Like them, we also wanna eat and respek them so we expect the same. We superstars as well people look up to us, we should be treated like ones. I'm not looking' for fame, but somethin' to make a livin' with. Until they give us, we gon' be aight. But for now, they wanna give it to the guys who already gettin' it. There's politics as well here.

Wise: Haha ok I hear you man. What are your social med handles where people can get hold of you?

Gunna: I'm @RealGunnaTR everywhere (Facebook, Twitter & IG) - And our page is "Revolution Music Group" –

Wise: Ma ninja. Keep pushing man, keep them lights on. we celebrate and appreciate your life

Gunna: Highly Appreciated G - and thanks to all those who keep showin' love also for a nygga, caus' I couldn't get inspiration if it wasn't for them givin' their love. I will always do it for the people, caus' we people caus' people. Whether it breaks us or makes us, but people make other people. Peace to the World
Wise: That's what's up

In Touch with Dizz (Former HHC Chairman)

Got in touch with a man who always played hide and see with me. He's the founder and former chairman of hip hop cares foundation, He is one of the few I know that has nothing but a dream to see BGF hip hop movement penetrating the main stream, selfless when coming to giving to the community. His name is Mandisi Kekana AKA Dizz

Wise: Sup Dizz?

Dizz: Nothing much ..what's up?

Wise: I'm dope. You gonna be my victim or you go let me slide pass you again?

Dizz: Let's go ... Can't avoid u forever

Wise: Hahaha ma man finally. And I know you don't need no introduction so we gonna jump on it. You still very much part of hip hop cares foundation but now as a former chairman that stepped down, how are things a HHC so far since the new leadership got behind the helm?

Dizz: I have to admit that I see more confidence, more will to work for the community, more communication and more commitment from our members. While the new leadership is finding their feet I can say with confidence that they will take us to higher heights

Wise: Ma man and how is it like to be away from the hot chair?

Dizz: The lights were too bright. I can see things a bit more clear now. I also find my self working extra hard prove myself and worth to my new chairman. Now that I am an additional member I have to follow protocol on everything as well ...its crazy but humbling.  I now understand our cause again as Hip Hop Cares. Why 3 years ago I even started this foundation.

Wise: Lol I know the feeling. How is it like to have new edition on board?

Dizz: New people, new ideas, new clientele. These people have fresh perspective. That's what growth is about

Wise: Tell us about the honour and acknowledgment of Kingdom Management.

Dizz: Funny enough I don't know much about it. The award was given to us at Miss Mafate for uniting the community through music, nurturing talent and giving back. I am humbled by this award coz it shows people see and appreciate the team does. Personally I am not a fan of being awarded or congratulated for HHC. I feel it is all our duty to give back to the community and help each other. I don't want to be praised for human nature.

Wise: True that but unfortunately when someone is being human and do what is good by nature, someone is watching and will definitely salute. Now as much as we have big structures acknowledging and see the beauty of the organization, we also have those who grew a habit of sitting on the organization's name whenever they feel like relieving themselves, can you address that issue?

Dizz: I do not understand it. If anyone has figured it out let us know. What is it that we have not provided?
(1) The chairperson announced that there is an open door policy. Inbox him if you have a problem. There people everyone is familiar with like Percy that one can talk to or simply inbox our page.
 (2) Why would someone say they love HHC then talk ill of it? If we family like we say we are, why can't we talk to each other?

I mean there is a procedure that one can follow every time they not happy. Genesis and Actual League do so all the time. Their stuff is always sorted and people think they are favoured.

(3) You want Burgersfort to take you seriously as an artist but lack professionalism. I have never seen Chyma complain about gig organizers before consultation.

I can tell that some of these rappers know they are not good enough to make careers out of their music simply by the way they behave. If girls from Re Basadi can encourage each other and build with Tebatso , why can't full grown men do the same ?

Wise: Don't hurt em. On a point of professionalism how can we help our artists to never let their personal vendettas be mixed up with their professional level and professional structures?

Dizz: We need to have more conversations. We need more maturity. We as HHC can only do so much. Other stakeholders need to be involved. I say we must work with and support rappers who are ready to (1) listen (2) improve (3) take action.  We cannot allow a few individuals to ruin the party for the rest mos?

I can tell you that I had personal issues with Turm and Prism before but when its crunch time we came together and held it down for Burgersfort.
WE DOING THIS FOR THEM

Wise: Ma man I so hope we can reach that level where artists are willing to listen, improve and act. What is new out of HHC that fans need to know about?

Dizz: HHC has opened its doors for events for the people by the people. Your activity on our Facebook page and twitter determines the direction of the organization. Play your part now.
We also have a huge surprise waiting for our loyal community builders

Wise: The event is going back to Ubber right?

Dizz: By popular demand sir

Wise: 02 July it is. Man as much as we love and celebrate Hip Hop Cares Foundation, so we appreciate and celebrate your life. As I humbly thank you for your time

Dizz: Thanks for giving us exposure.

Wise: It's our job ain't it?

Dizz: Its build season. It’s sowing time. The seeds we sowing now will rule BGF in 2years

Wise: Ma man

Corner Office (In Touch With Akeelah)

Our beloved charity organization hip hop care foundation recently appointed new board to steer this ship forward. Among the newly elected committee is our sister Akelang  Moropane AKA Akeelah. I got in touch with the first lady……..

Wise: Akeelah ma lady

Akeelah: hello

Wise: You good?

Akeelah: I’m great thanks yourself?

Wise: couldn’t be better, you good to go?

Akeelah: yea let’s do this.

Wise: ma lady, ok tell us a lil bit about Akeelah, who is she and what is she about?

Akeelah: Akeelah is a queen in her own right! Shs just a rural girl from Steelpoort with ambitions like every other 23 year old. She is about developing herself and people around her yet growing in all corners of life.

Wise: Nice, you've been appointed the deputy chair of hip hop cares foundation recently. How long have you been with the organization and what were you doing before your current appointment?

Akeelah: I've been with HHC since from its inception. I was there with them on almost every event, though I wasn't part of management! I was just a fan applauding from afar. Before my current appointment, I was only helping them with distributing the donations

Wise: Amazing from that to deputy chairperson. And how are you settling down on your new position?

Akeelah: I'm still trying to find my feet! The organization is very big. You can imagine what's expected of everyone to make events successful. It’s very stressful at times but I love every minute of it.. My team is amazing; they are very hands on and hardworking!

Wise: I can imagine. Since the organization is all about charity, giving to the community through hip hop art form. Do you think artists are doing enough to contribute in giving back to the community?

Akeelah: Personally I think they r doing nothing in giving back to their communities.. It’s organisation's like ours that forces them to come and contribute in giving back... On their own, they r doing zilch work in developing their communities
WITH FORMER CHAIR (DIZZ)

Wise: Are you having something in mind that can motivate them to try their level best, what I mean is does hip  hop cares have campaigns to have rappers share and understand their your mandate?

Akeelah: It's still very premature to go into details but HHC is expanding its horizons with a different change of scenery other than the one we r all used to. We are going BIG. We need rappers to understand that we can't do this without them! Hip Hop doesn't have to be about rap battles and beef...it has to go beyond that n let people know that Hip Hop Cares

Wise: Amen to that. I heard that we going to break the cold ko Uber lifestyle this winter: what influenced the decision to take the event back there?

Akeelah: HHC did a survey, interviewed people and judging on the response we got we decided we stick to Uber! Our last event in December (Uhuru) was almost a disaster...the place was too big, people were swimming in the middle of performances, and the sound was horrible to say the least. Uber is very intimate, the crowd can focus on one thing and the Uber management always makes sure our events run smoothly.

Wise: Ma lady. Are you satisfied with a number of feemces we have an BGF, I mean since you are a woman and holding a position many ignorant still believe it's for men, we also have those who believe hip hop is not for women

Akeelah: I can never be satisfied until we have Feemces only performing and going head to head during a HHC event haha. It's 2016 for god sake and women dominate in a men's world! Fifi cooper for example set the bar up high for us ladies in hip hop. I doubt people still hip hop as a genre for men only after that

Wise: Haha I wasn't calling for imbokoto spirit to manifest, any info from the organization that people need to be notified off?

Akeelah: We have a surprise for them and it will be revealed in due time. Like I said, we are going big! Our fans are gonna love this. Other than that! We Love our people for their unconditional support!

Wise: And last remarks from deputy chair lady?

Akeelah: Hip hop cares fully supports charities and schools in the Burgersfort area. I wish people could talk to us more and give us insight about their very own communities so that we don’t focus on one area! This organization is for people, it's not ANC thou but we are doing this for our communities. Lastly, thank you to everyone who supports HHC. We are who we are because of you.

Wise: Let me take this time to congratulate you on your appointment and thank you for talking to us. We celebrate and appreciate your life. Keep the light on.

Akeelah: Thank you

Man On The Throne.

N ose has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he is the king of BGF hip hop. with his 2016 single from November Man mixtape #200, Nos...
